German intelligence has announced that they believe Russia was behind attacks on several energy providers within Germany last week. According to a spokesman for the BfV, Germany’s domestic intelligence service, there were several indicators which led them to believe that Russia was behind the attack. No details about the attack have been made public at this time other than it is believed that Berserk Bear, aka Dragonfly 2.0, was behind the attack. If this is the case, the affected energy providers were likely targeted through a phishing campaign, which would have then been used to install malware designed to give attackers a foothold into the targeted networks so that other tools could be uploaded at a later date. Russia has already denied the attacks, as is typical, claiming that there are no facts to back up any of Germany’s claims.
