LabCorp Hit by Breach

Over the weekend, Laboratory Corp. of America (LabCorp) shut down some of their systems in order to contain a data breach after noticing “suspicious activity.” LabCorp is based in Burlington, NC, but operates small blood-testing facilities in cities across the United States–employing over 60,000 people and reporting $10.3 billion in revenue last year. In spite of early reports that the entire network had been shut down and millions of customers’ information exposed, only the diagnostics service was found to have been affected. So far, there is no evidence that any medical records were accessed, much less stolen. LabCorp has notified the proper authorities and are investigating the breach. The system shutdown “temporarily affected test processing and customer access to test results over the weekend,” LabCorp spokespeople said. The company said systems should be fully functional in a few days, but some customers may experience a delay in receiving lab results during that time. LabCorp may have dodged a bullet, as some have said, or they may actually be highly proactive–with good systems in place to help mitigate damage by cyber-criminals. What remains as true, however, are media reports assuming the worst before knowing all of the facts.
