Prosecutors and law enforcement in Georgia are working together to combat Business Email Compromise (BEC) fraud schemes. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia is joining forces with Metro-Atlanta District Attorneys, the Office of the Attorney General, the FBI Atlanta Field Office, U.S. Secret Service, state, and local law enforcement to make up the Georgia Cyber Fraud Task Force. BEC crimes have become incredibly lucrative for cyber threat actors making them more popular; the FBI reported over 1,000 BEC scams in 2020. In a BEC scam, criminals send an email that appears to come from a legitimate source, and requests money from an individual or organization. The Georgia Cyber Fraud Task Force hopes to disrupt the financial structure that makes BEC scams so lucrative for criminals.
