Medical Equipment Packaging Company Hacker Sentenced

Christopher Dobbins, a former vice president at a Georgia-based medical equipment packaging company, was sentenced to a year in prison yesterday for computer intrusion charges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company worked to get personal protective equipment (PPE) to medical workers treating sick patients. Disgruntled after being fired in March, Dobbins used a secret account he had created before being fired to access the company’s systems from home.

He disrupted their electronic records by creating a user account, editing over 115,000 documents, and deleting over 2,300 entries. The intrusion delayed the delivery of PPE to medical providers and disrupted the company’s operations for months. When the company realized something was wrong, they alerted the FBI. The FBI quickly discovered who was behind the intrusion and arrested Dobbins in July.
