Otterbein University Suffers Malware Attack Shortly After Announcing All Online Classes

Due to COVID-19, Otterbein University and many others in the state of Ohio have decided to shift to all online classes. Shortly after this was announced by the university, a malware attack struck their network. University officials do not have a timetable as to when the systems will be back to normal but hope to have an announcement made by tomorrow to update students and other staff. No leads as to how the attack took place have been discovered thus far but Otterbein stated that they are working with experienced computer forensics specialists to reveal how the attack happened and what they can do to resolve the issue.

Analyst Notes

Students and staff that have recently logged in to any accounts that require a username and password on a university computer are advised to change those passwords as soon as possible on a non-university computer. Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) with continuous monitoring is an important component of a strong defense strategy to stop computer intrusions in the early stages, before attackers have the chance to spread across the network and deploy ransomware on critical servers.
