Virgin Media Data Breach

Virgin Media, a leading cable operator in the UK and Ireland, announced today that the personal information of roughly 900,000 customers was accessed without permission. According to an ongoing investigation, a misconfigured and unsecured marketing database has been publicly accessible since April 2019. The database did not include any passwords or financial data but did contain limited contact information such as names, home addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses according to Lutz Schuler, CEO of Virgin Media.

Analyst Notes

Virgin Media has reached out to the affected customers via email to alert them to the data breach. Customers were warned that this information could be used in phishing attacks, fraud, and nuisance marketing communications. If someone suspects that their information was used for identify theft, they should monitor their credit report and contact their financial institutions to report unusual charges or accounts opened in their name that they did not authorize.
