Windows XP Source Code Leaked Online

Recently, the Windows XP source code was leaked onto 4chan as a 42.9GB torrent file, as originally reported by ZDNet. The leak included the source code for Microsoft’s older OS, including Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003 and more. The leak also included Windows 10 source code files. However, based on analysis of the files, while the files are legitimate, the leak is not new and instead appears to be a collection of various other older breaches.

Analyst Notes

As Windows XP reached its end of life on April 8, 2014, all mission-critical systems should have been moved off XP by now. However, if they are not, this should be yet another push to upgrade systems. When attackers have access to source code, any unknown exploits are easier to write.
