Missouri-based health care provider Blue Springs recently suffered a ransomware attack due to a data breach that occurred on May 12, 2018. It is unclear who the attackers are, but they successfully managed to compromise 44,979 patient records in the attack. The stolen data included full names, driver’s license numbers, medical diagnoses, home addresses, social security numbers, disability codes, and account numbers. The ransomware used is unknown at the time of writing this article, however it appears that a variety of different malware was used in the attack. Blue Springs informed their patients and said, “we have taken steps to strengthen our defenses against similar incidents in the future.”
