California Pizza Kitchen Suffers Data Breach Exposing Social Security Numbers

Well-known pizza chain California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) revealed recently that they suffered a data breach. CPK stated they were made aware of a disruption to their systems on or around September 15th, 2021. After investigation, it was determined that threat actors were able to access files that were stored on their systems. One of those files included former and current employee names and Social Security Numbers. CPK has not directly stated how many people were affected, but the Maine attorney general’s office reports that 103,767 people were impacted, eight of which were Maine residents. “Information security is among our highest priorities, and we have strict security measures in place to protect information in our care,” CPK added. “Upon discovering this incident, we immediately took steps to review and reinforce the security of our computing environment. We are reviewing existing security policies and have implemented additional measures to further protect against similar incidents moving forward.”

Analyst Notes

Impacted individuals should contact the three main credit bureaus (TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian) as soon as possible and put fraud alerts on their credit report. Moving forward, credit reports should be analyzed thoroughly. If something suspicious is discovered on a credit report, it should be reported promptly.
