Over 36,000 patients of Austin Cancer Centers in Austin, Texas are being notified of a data breach that has compromised personal information. Suspicious activity was noticed on the 4^th of August and after investigation was conducted, it was determined that the attackers managed to make their way into the systems on or around July 21^st. All IT systems were taken offline when the attack was confirmed. At this time, it has not yet been determined whether the attack was related to ransomware or not, but if it is, that information will be released once confirmed. Information that was compromised included Social Security numbers, names, addresses, birthdates, credit card numbers, and health-related information.

ANALYST NOTES

Those that may be affected should take advantage of the online credit monitoring services and fraud insurance with coverage up to $1,000,000 being offered by the Austin Cancer Centers. Employees of the center have also begun retraining related to this incident. Austin Career Centers should also consider implementing a defense-in-depth strategy to combat attacks like these. Pairing anti-virus solutions with endpoint monitoring will greatly reduce the total damage of the attack.
