A report has been released stating that the Facebook breach was not carried out by a nation-state actor. Originally, it was believed that the attack was carried out by a nation-state actor due to the mass amount of accounts which were compromised, and the information that was stolen. However, after investigation it appears the attack was carried out by spammers. The attackers pretended to be a digital marketing company in order to steal 30 million user tokens. Facebook did not confirm the report about who was behind the attack and stated that they were requested not to speak about who was behind it at this time. If it was not nation-state based, it may be better news for Facebook after they were accused of their system being used by nation-state actors as a way of trying to affect the outcome of elections.
