German Oil and Petrol Suppliers Affected by Cyber Attack

A cyber-attack has affected German petrol and oil suppliers Oiltanking GmbH and Mabanaft GmbH, who are both owned by the Marquard & Bahls firm. The firm is responsible for supplying oil and gas to 26 different corporations in the country, which has some worried that the situation may cause fuel shortages. While experts say the supply of fuel is not at risk, the longer the IT issues within the company last, the higher the chance the supply chain is affected, which in turn could cause shortages at fuel stations. While the attack has not yet been connected to any specific group, it is worth noting that the BfV warned German companies of an uptick of attacks being carried out by APT27. It would not be a shock if a state sponsored group was behind an attack that could potentially cause economic damage to an entire country.

Analyst Notes

The firm has taken steps to reassess their security posture and better secure their systems. With investigations continuing, it is likely that the attack vector will be released in the coming weeks after the firm’s IT systems come back online.
