ICANN Discloses Iranian Attacks Have Been Ongoing Since 2017

Iran: The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced last Friday that their systems have been the subject of “an ongoing and significant risk.”  ICANN’s Chief technology officer, David Conrad, stated that their systems have been targeted in the past, but nothing like what they have seen over the past two years.  The attacks have been ongoing since 2017 but Conrad warned that the attacks have worsened recently, including an increase in attacks on Domain Name Servers.  This increase has prompted emergency meetings within ICANN to combat the issue.  ICANNs biggest concern is that Iranian attackers will reroute traffic in an effort to support Iran’s espionage efforts around the world.  Iran’s growing efforts in the area of cyber-espionage and cyber-sabotage have been growing greatly over the past several years and are an ever-increasing concern for more and more organizations around the world.
