Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) fined Meta Platforms, the corporate parent of Facebook and WhatsApp, $18.6 million for violations of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). GDPR functions as a primary component of the EU’s laws regarding the protection of consumer personal data and privacy. The fines relate to improper disclosure related to the mitigations Facebook was required to put in place after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, but do not relate to the fines for the Cambridge Analytica event itself, which occurred prior to the May 2018 start of GDPR’s enforcement.
