Hamas: Over the weekend, the IDF responded in a rather unusual fashion to a cyber-threat from Hamas–they launched a strike on the building the attack was being launched from. The IDF claimed that they were a step ahead of the attack the entire time and that the attacker’s attempt failed. The building that was hit was the “cyber headquarters” for Hamas, where they are believed to have coordinated all of their cyber-operations.
Analyst Notes
It is believed that this airstrike has completely removed Hamas’ cyber-capabilities, although the group probably still has assets which can rebuild the group’s cyber-operations. Over the past several years, many discussions have taken place around the world of when it would be appropriate to retaliate to cyber-attacks with military force.
