New Haven Connecticut Public Schools Suffers Ransomware Attack

Although not many details have been exposed, New Haven Public Schools had their website infected with ransomware. The attack occurred while the school district was working on its new website and the district’s COO confirmed that it did not have anything to do with the software installation. “It was a hacker attack. This was not because we installed any software,” said Michael Pinto, the COO. The district did not reveal the ransom amount, but they confirmed that they have not paid it and they are currently reviewing their security protocols. After some time investigating, all the encrypted files were restored from offline backups.

Analyst Notes

Since the school district had their files backed up offline, they saved themselves a lot of time and money. A firewall is suggested to be used to monitor incoming and outgoing network traffic.
