SEC Warns Investors of Government Impersonation Scams

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has warned investors in the United States about ongoing scams that are impersonating SEC officials using phone calls, voicemail, email, and letters. The alert comes from SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy (OIEA), which regularly issues warnings to inform investors about the latest developments in investment frauds and scams. The alert stated that they were aware of multiple scams that were being carried out against US investors. The scams are impersonating SEC phone numbers and are contacting victims asking about unauthorized transactions on their cryptocurrency account.

Analyst Notes

To confirm the identity of someone behind unsolicited calls or messages claiming to be from the SEC, you can use the SEC’s personnel locator at (202) 551-6000, or call (800) SEC-0330 or email [email protected]. The SEC states that they will never ask for sensitive information over the phone, nor do they seek money from any person or entity outside of the formal enforcement process. If you are contacted by someone from the SEC, be sure to thoroughly validate their identity.
