Stanford University experienced a data breach in which sensitive admission information for the Economics Ph.D program was compromised. Unauthorized access to a restricted university network area was discovered in January 2023. The breached information included sensitive data such as names, addresses, phone numbers, race, ethnicity, transcripts, and personal statements. Stanford University assured that no social security data or financial information were affected in the data breach.
