While investigating evidence from the recent Hafnium attacks, IT and security staff for the government of Belgium found evidence of another breach going back years rather than months. According to officials, the attackers “acted in a targeted manner, which is reminiscent of espionage” and “the complexity of this attack indicated an actor who had cyber capabilities and extensive resources.” While officials are not pinning attribution on any nation-state, the history of DDoS during hearings concerning China’s Uyghur forced labor camps lead to some suspicion that China may have been behind the earlier breach, or at least would have been motivated to support such an action.
