How COVID-19 Has Impacted the Darknet

Digital Shadows, a Darknet monitoring firm, reported a surge in underground cybercrime sites and an increase in the number of “jobs” available for people to support the criminal forums and marketplaces. Multiple posts have been made on different websites looking for help. An administrator from the forum, Nulled, posted that the “community” was “especially growing rapidly during COVID-19” and as a result, it “require[s] additional assistance.” Another administrator from CrackedTO posted a “Help Wanted” advertisement on the forum titled “Your Chance to work in a Team of one of the biggest Cracking/Leaking Forum,” describing the job duties and stating, “You have to be mature and handle situations professionally.”

Digital Shadows stated, “While there have been many predictable consequences of the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, few would have foreseen significant growth for multiple cyber-criminal forums. Digital Shadows has observed forums being stretched at the seams due to their newfound pandemic popularity.” Digital Shadows also stated, “In retrospect, it’s not that surprising: the coronavirus has placed enormous economic pressure on millions of people worldwide. It’s not illogical to surmise that some individuals may have turned to cybercrime to plug holes in their finances.”
