Russia Successfully Disconnects From the Internet:

On Monday, Russia successfully disconnected the country from the worldwide internet. While not a lot of information was given by the Russian government, it was confirmed that the country’s national internet infrastructure (RuNet), could function without access to the global DNS system and the external internet. Originally proposed as a response to cyber-attacks, the RuNet plan has also drawn fire from privacy advocates that state that, while the chokepoints that all Russian internet is redirected through functions as a gigantic flip-switch for the Russian external internet, it could also serve as an internet surveillance apparatus, similar to China’s firewall.
