Vodafone Portugal Hit by Attack Interrupting Service

Vodafone Portugal released information earlier today regarding an attack overnight which caused an outage for the company’s 4G and 5G mobile networks, fixed voice, television, SMS, and voice/digital answering services, all of which were still offline at the time of the press release. Vodafone Portugal has not attributed the incident to a ransomware attack at this time. According to their press release, the company has said it is working with authorities to investigate the incident and that based on current evidence, customer data does not appear to have been accessed or compromised.

Analyst Notes

While the press release states that the issue is ongoing, DownDetector Portugal currently indicates no service interruptions. Beyond service issues, it is important to have a plan to ensure continuity in the event of a service outage, whether from a malicious attack or not. A survey by the Information Technology Intelligence Consulting (ITIC) group noted that 80% of respondents indicated a $300,000 loss per hour during an outage.
