Unknown: An unknown attacker has been compromising the Twitter accounts of different Mexican government departments and officials. Tweets on some of the accounts stated that the account was now compromised but did not say by who. After the accounts are taken over, anti-corruption posts are made in response to the Mexican government being outed as corrupt. The attacker posted that he had police looking for him in other countries because he had carried out the same types of attacks against other corrupt governments in Spain, El Salvador, and Panama. Thus far, attacks have only been seen on Twitter, but Mexican officials fear that the attacks will spill over to other systems.
Analyst Notes
There is no indication at this point who is behind the attacks or what country they will begin to target next. The attacker may be doing this for attention and choosing the officials with the weakest security in place.
