California based healthcare technology provider Omnicell has revealed they suffered a security incident recently. Omnicell publicly announced that some of their internal systems were accessed on May 4, 2022. The proper authorities have been informed; however, the full scope of the attack has not yet been uncovered as investigations are still ongoing. Omnicell stated, “The company is in the early stages of its investigation and assessment of the security event and cannot determine, at this time, the extent of the impact from such an event on our business, results of operations or financial condition or whether such impact will have a material adverse effect.” As the investigations continue, more information such as the type of data that was accessed and what ransomware was used will likely be disclosed.

In 2021, the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) collected 148 complaints of ransomware incidents within the healthcare space, making it the most targeted industry for the respective year. With this data available, healthcare providers and industries associated with healthcare products should consider taking a more in-depth approach towards security.
