Dental and vision benefits provider Dominion National (DN) recently divulged a data breach which compromised the information of current and former members. An internal alert tipped DN off and they responded by immediately seeking the help of a third-party cybersecurity team to run an investigation. Through the investigation, they were able to determine that an unknown entity was able to access multiple servers stemming back to August 25th of 2010. Included in the compromised data were names, addresses, dates of birth, email addresses, Social Security numbers, taxpayer identification numbers, bank account and routing numbers, member ID numbers, group numbers, and subscriber numbers of current and former members. Although DN believes that none of the data was actually “accessed, acquired, or misused,” they still made the cautious effort of cleaning the servers that were affected and improving their monitoring and alerting software. The FBI and individuals who could have possibly been affected have been notified of the breach and as another precautionary measure, Dominion National is offering two years of free credit monitoring and fraud protection services through ID Experts MyIDCare.

As always, it is strongly suggested that users take advantage of the free monitoring service being offered by the company. The improved security measures taken by the company should greatly reduce the risk of another instance like this happening, but users must be careful since their information may already be in the hands of someone with malicious intent. It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for any suspicious emails or any unusual activity involving accounts that are associated with the exposed information. If abnormal activity is seen, users should not object to any requests and report it to the company or service that it involves.
