Campbell County Health in Gillette, Wyoming was struck with ransomware early Friday morning. Reports state that all computer systems have been affected and other services are down including inpatient admissions, radiology exams, and surgery cancellations. All computers in the hospital have been turned off and its patient care activity has been extremely difficult since the attack hit. Hospitals in surrounding areas of Casper, Rapid City, and Sheridan have all been notified and assure that they are willing to take patients on a case-by-case basis. Patients who require a heavier amount of care are being transferred from Campbell County, but their Emergency Department is still operational, and staff is there ready to deal with patient issues accordingly. “At this point in time, there is no evidence that any patient data has been accessed or misused. The investigation is ongoing, and we will provide updates when more information becomes available. We are working diligently to restore complete access to our services,” states the county website. The DHS, FBI, FEMA and the governor’s office have all had discussions with Campbell Country to try to determine what they can do to help mitigate the situation.

Since the infection method and intention of the attackers is not clear, users will simply want to keep a close eye on accounts of personal data that may have been affected. The hospital will want to strengthen the firewall and search for a strong anti-virus protection software.
